Perfect Fanbook 23.5 – Tanegashima Shuuji
Tanegashima Shuuji
He can determine the ball’s spin on sight and has the natural reflexes to instantly react and be in the best position to receive it. If you look closely between the fact he’s always goofing around and never caught off-guard, there’s a unique insightfulness and defensive strength to his way of doing things.

Personal Belongings Check by Tokugawa Kazuya: Travel Bag Edition – Goggles and snorkel
“You’ve gone so far as to bring Kurobe-coach’s segway… Tanegashima-san, you’re brimming with a playful spirit – something about it seems fun.”
Oomagari’s Edition! Tenipedia
“You fell right asleep following the ‘Cessna’s penalty’6… Your hatred of airplanes must have only been spurred by this punishment. Merely hearing the word ‘airplane’ seems to give you a headache. I’m sorry that happened to you.”
Messages to Tanegashima!
From Shirashi: “Seeing your ‘flash tennis’ inspired me to a new level. I really can’t express my gratitude enough.”
From Irie: “I’ve been practicing a new song. You’ll listen to me play without running away this time, right? Ju~ust kidding.”
From Zeus: “You’re a brave man, deceiving me like that. I admire it. Was this meeting guided by the Twelve Olympians or what?”
From Sengoku: “Tanegashima-san, you hate airplanes? But you’re lucky that you can watch brand new movies on the in-flight entertainment seatback screens.”
TRANSLATOR’S NOTES:
1 This is in reference to the fact he rides the coach’s segway at night, but he also uses the verb “cruising” in his image song, Get Chuuuuu☆.
2 His pet has more commonly been translated as a parrot. However, in the ‘Messages to Tanegashima’ segment, there is a profile picture of a cockatoo, and frankly the image is even funnier to me.
3 The term 夢の国 is used in his profile (lit. land of dreams) which is a common way to describe Tokyo Disneyland (and literally every other country with a Disneyland).
4 This is specifically a type of pool in which you go to have fun and party with your friends rather than swim (there’s an article here, but it’s in Japanese). It’s a common place to spam pictures to Instagram.
5 I thought this was interesting. There’s a common theory that Tanegashima comes from the island called Tanegashima, due to the fact that he uses the Kansai dialect, comes from an island down south (confirmed in Fanbook 10.5), and his hobby is gun shooting. If he does originally come from Tanegashima, it’s likely that he has to travel to any major tennis tournaments he participates in, hence the comment about hotel pools specifically.
6 This is mentioned in Golden Age 137. It’s not explicitly stated what the punishment is (as far as I can remember), but Cessna used to be a high-volume producer of airplanes before it got absorbed by its parent company and became a brand instead. With Oomagari’s comment, it’s likely that Tanegashima was made to ride on the plane despite his hatred of them.
